About

Opened in March 1999, the Butler Media Center supports the playback of multiple visual and audio formats. Materials held in the Butler Media Collection can be viewed at any of the workstations.

The Center is located in 208B Butler Library. Phone: 854-1715.

Access and Use

Currently enrolled Columbia University and affiliated institutions students, faculty and staff are permitted to use the center. One time use of the center is granted to individuals with Metro Card referral. NYU students are permitted to use the center.

Priority for use of the center is given to those individuals using the facility for course related purposes and multimedia research and projects. Staff are permitted to reserve workstations for individuals conducting multimedia research particularly during high use periods.

  • 17 Sony VCR's--multi-standard
  • 17 Denon multi-standard and multi-code DVD
  • 4 Tascam audiocassette players
  • 1 Pioneer laserdisc/DVD/CD player

Collections

The purpose of the Butler Media Collection is to support Columbia University instruction and research. Opened in January 1997, the initial concentration is on classic, documentary, and performing arts films. All titles in the collection are cataloged in CLIO, the Libraries' online computer catalog. The formats are primarily videorecordings, digital versatile discs (DVD) and laserdiscs. We welcome inquiries and suggestions about media resources.

Class Screenings

Screening requests should be forwarded to Butler Reserves. For titles not currently held in the Butler Media Collection, purchase requests should be forwarded to Nancy Friedland.
